Lifeguard

Position Summary: Under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Manager, Student Manager(s) and Lifeguard Supervisors, employees in this position are responsible for providing a safe, educational and fun experience to guests by monitoring, responding to, and aiding all participants.

Responsibilities:
  • Monitors activities in and near the water through patron surveillance
  • Preventing injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors by cautioning swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards
  • Enforcing facility rules and regulations and educating patrons about them
  • Provide general information on pool operations, as well as other Student Wellness programs
  • Recognizing and responding quickly and effectively to all emergencies
  • Administering first aid and CPR, including using an AED and administering emergency oxygen when needed
  • Attend all trainings and perform required skills to the standard
  • Follows established emergency action plan and procedures in the event of an emergency
  • Maintain emergency equipment (e.g. rescue tubes, backboards, signs and other equipment)
  • Inspect facility safety and pool for cleanliness; perform facility safety checks, general pool cleaning and maintenance when required
  • Complete and maintain records of pool and area conditions, potential safety hazards, emergency medical treatments performed, and all relevant incident information
  • Set-up and take-down pool equipment according to the pool schedule
  • Work varied schedule including, early mornings, late nights, holidays, weekends and split-shifts
  • Other BYU Aquatics responsibilities as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Minimum age 16.
  • Excellent swimming skills and physical conditioning
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of pool equipment and maintenance
  • Work effectively with people of different background, abilities, opinions and perceptions
  • Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills- politely assertive, tact, patient, and diplomatic while dealing with complex problems
  • Attention to detail with high level of accuracy and the ability to adapt
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED Certification required
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to sit or stand and remain vigilant for extended periods
  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Must be physically able to run, swim, perform rescues without assistance

Common Hiring Periods: August – September; December – January; April – May

Starting Pay: $12.50

Hours: Vary based on availability & preference of employee; BYU Pools are open between 6am – 10pm
