WHO ARE WE?
The Student Wellness Alliance is a student committee whose purpose is to advise on current student wellness programming and policies, identify and address student needs, and seek solutions to improve student wellness across campus. We are advocates for students across campus and will collect data and implement solutions supported by scholarly research.
This committee will support the Student Wellness department in its mission to “promote life-long behaviors that lead to a healthier and happier life [and] enhance the BYU experience by providing safe facilities, education, programs and services that inspire and assist students in becoming their best selves.”
COMPOSITION
This committee is comprised of six students from a variety of backgrounds. We strive to represent an array of majors across campus in order to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Alliance members attend monthly meetings (11 am on the first Thursday of every month) where they present student input and progress on current projects. Committee advisors are also available to meet one-on-one with alliance members as needed for mentoring purposes.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Winter 2022
Members of the Student Wellness Alliance used survey responses to create a block schedule for open play activities according to student interest in each activity. Campus Scheduling approved our proposal to include open play on their official schedules. As such, open play time will be protected from other reservations, and students can know with certainty that there will be a gym available at the scheduled times.
The official open play schedule was implemented beginning fall semester 2022 and is posted on the gym doors and the Student Wellness website. Changes to this schedule are announced on our website.

Fall 2022 & Winter 2023
Our goal this year was to improve Outreach to student populations on campus. Members of the Student Wellness Alliance did research to pinpoint one campus population that tends to have lower participation in student recreation. STEM Majors stood out to our team, so we planned an event just for them.
In March 2023 we hosted a Pop-up Yoga Workshop in the Engineering Building. Not only did students have a fun and relaxing time, but they all left with more information about our Student Wellness Programs. According to participant survey responses, almost 100% of our participants were STEM Majors who claim that they plan to participate in Student Wellness Programs more often because of the positive experience they had at our event. Notably, many of the students claimed that they generally don't participate due to lack of awareness. We determined that holding pop-up events such as this one all across campus will increase Student Wellness exposure to all BYU students, and hopefully as a result, increase participation.

SCHOLARSHIP
Each year, we offer a $500 scholarship to six students that are qualified to participate on this committee. Acceptance of the scholarship is not conditional upon participation on the committee; however, we hope that the students who receive the scholarship will also be willing to devote some time to this cause.
